Pioneer Mother Died in California

Mrs. J. H. Carpenter died at the home of her son, Bob, in McArthur, California September 12, 1936. She was 84 years and 8 months old at the time of her death. She was born in Missouri Jan. 13th 1852. On December 4th, 1865 Josephine Millsap was united in marriage to Henry Carpenter. To this union fifteen children were born to whom thirteen reached maturity and are all still living. Last December on the 4th the Carpenters celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary. Mr. Carpenter passed away on December 19th. They lived in Payette Valley during most of the last forty-five years.

Her body way brought to New Plymouth by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Carpenter and Winifred Carpenter.

Services were held at the Kennedy Cemetery at 2 o'clock Tuesday and interment was made beside her husband. Rev. G. A. Finch of Payette and Rev. Hugh R. Jordon of Ontario both former pastors of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter conducted the services.

The surviving children are Mary Miles of Payette, Etta Cole, Ontario, Ann Hanley of Redlands, California, Dess Wilburn of Paddock Valley, Bob and Winifred Carpenter of McArthur, California, Nell Welburn and Grace Knee of Midvale, Alfred, Jim, Wes and Les of New Plymouth and Lida Atkins of Cascade.

All but two of the children were present. One hundred and eight descendants are living.

Many beautiful flowers were presented by loving relatives and friends tokens of love and respect to a mother who was really a mother not only to her own children and grandchildren but also to everyone who asked for and needed help and advice.
