Rites Monday For Vernon Smartwood

NEW PLYMOUTH - Services for Vernon Smartwood (should be Swartwood), 83, who died Friday at an Ontario hospital were conducted Monday at the New Plymouth Shaffer Memory chapel by the Rev. Hayden Abel. Interment followed at Park View cemetery in New Plymouth.

Mr. Smartwood was born July 2, 1883, in Clay County, Kan. He married Florence Christie on May 20, 1909, at Clay Center, Kan. They moved to Weiser in 1919 and moved in 1930 to Fruitland, where they operated the Fruitland Cash Market for 18 years. They had lived in New Plymouth since 1948.

Surviving are his wife, Florence; a son, Samuel, Oak Harbor, Wash.; five daughters, Mrs. Constance Scanlan, Boise, Mrs. Dorothy Naylor, Parma, Mrs. Evelyn Griffiths, Fruitland, Mrs. Oma Rogers, Boise, and Mrs. Gwendolyn House, Travis Air Force Base, Calif., 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
