Alfred Spurling

Funeral services for Alfred Thomas Spurling, 72, longtime resident of New Plymouth who died last Wednesday at a Boise hospital, were held Saturday at the New Plymouth Shaffer-Jensen Memory chapel.

Elder Harry S. Fry of the RLDS church officiated. Interment with military honors was at Park View cemetery.

He was born April 19, 1896, in London, England. He came to the U.S. with his parents when he was 11 years old. The family settled at Elgin, Neb., where they engaged in farming.

He served in France with the U.S. Army during World War 1. He married Clara Freeman at Oakdale, Neb. on June 24, 1922. After farming in Nebraska for a number of years, he and his wife moved to Grants Pass, Ore., in 1936. They then moved to a farm at New Plymouth in 1948, where they had since resided. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clara Spurling of New Plymouth; a son James Spurling, of New Plymouth; two foster sons, Elwyn L. Cole, of Detroit, and Joseph E. Ray, McCall; two brothers, Sidney Spurling, of Scribner, Neb., and William Spurling, of Corvallis, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs. Doris Dawson of St. Edwards, Neb., and Mrs. Florence Talbot, of Sacramento, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Philip Spurling, in 1952, a brother and three sisters.
