ONTARIO - Services for Joe Ben Baines, 73, Ontario, who died Saturday at home were conducted Wednesday at Shaffer-Jensen Chapel, Payette, by Allan Mitchell, Church of Christ, Mountain Home. Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery, Payette.

He was born Feb. 17, 1906, at Harrison, Ark., to Faus and Fanny Baines. He was reared and educated in Arkansas. He moved to Payette County in 1936. He worked for the Boise-Payette Lumber Co. from 1940 until 1944, when he began farming at Fruitland. He retired in 1972. He moved to Brownlee, Ore. and then to Ontario in 1977. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are his wife, Jennie of Ontario; four sons, Fred of Burley, Robert and Lonnie of Vancouver, Wash., and Eugene (Bud) Baines of Payette; a daughter, Mrs. Herb (Joanne) Nitz of Meridian; two stepsons, Lt. A. E. Hockman of Hawaii, and David W. Hockman of Boise; two stepdaughters, Debora Sprague of Boise, and Barbara Hockman of Missoula, Mont.; three brothers, John and Jim Baines of Fruitland, and George of Nampa; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a stepson.
