James W. "Bill" Boor
Graveside services for James W. "Bill" Boor, 70, Ontario, a longtime area resident, who died Saturday, April 9, 1983, in an Ontario hospital, after an eight year battle with cancer, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Riverside Cemetery, Payette, under the direction of the Ontario Lienkaemper Chapel. A memorial service followed by fellowship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Treasure Valley Baptist Church, 386 Verde Drive, Ontario.
He was born near Fruitland, August 7, 1912, the son of James Harrison Boor and Nancy Horton Boor. His early years were spent at Whitley Bottom near Fruitland. As a young man he developed a love for and skills with saddle and work horses. His family later operated a farm on what is now the site of Nyssa's Amalgamated Sugar Company. He graduated from Nyssa High School in 1933. He married Lorraine Lzicar July 1, 1939. He made his living as a farmer and carpenter until 1947 when he became custodian of Ontario Clinic. From 1963 until 1970 he and his family were owners and operators of the Park Motel which was located on SW 4th Avenue, Ont. Mr. Boor then again became a self-employed carpenter. In his retirement he returned to farming, with his son, in Ontario's Lincoln Heights neighborhood.
Mr. Boor combined his love for the outdoors with an enjoyment of young people. He expressed these interests through group camping, backpacking and burro packing excursions. In the late 1960's and 1970's his home was the site of weekly Bible studies for TVCC students and other young adults. During the last years of his life he helped to build a new family home, hunted and fished, farmed, helped neighbors with ranching chores, continued carpentry and visited favorite big desert haunts. As he became less active, he became an avid reader, focusing upon western regional works.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one son, Gary of Ontario; his son-in-law and daughter, Don and Patsy DeJong of Seattle; his daughter Debra of LaGrande, Wyo; one brother, Howard Boor of Boise; two sisters, Marie Boor Arney of Ashland, Ore. and Mabel Boor Eldridge of Sweet, Idaho; two grandsons, Todd and Eric DeJong; and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Boor.
