Payette - Emmett S. Butner, 91, formerly of Payette and Fruitland, died Jan. 22, 1994, in a Boise care center. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Church of Christ, Payette. Dr. Leonard Reifel, Ret., will officiate, with Masonic rites by Washoe Lodge #28, A.F.&A.M. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Payette, under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory chapel, Payette.

He was born May 21, 1902, at Bellfast, Wash., a son of John S. Butner and Annabelle Earl Butner. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 47 years and retired as an agent in Fruitland in 1967. He worked in Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Oregon. He enjoyed his lodge work and took pride in his prolific garden. He liked to be an at-home students, studying various subjects.

He married Josephine V. Kraker Nov. 2, 1927. She preceded him in death in 1972. He married Annabelle L. Russell in 1973. She died in 1987.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 56 years, and was a current member of Washoe Lodge A.F.&A.M. He was a member of the Royal Arch Masons, Cryptic Masons, Scottish Rite #20, and El Korah Shrine in Boise. He attended church at the First Methodist Church in Fruitland and the United Church of Christ in Payette.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rosalie Josephson Miedema and Vincent Miedema of Boise; two sons, John E. Butner of Boise and Richard H. Butner of Portland; a son and daughter-in-law, Boat and Bess Butner of Boise (Robie Creek); a sister, Dolly Nish of Butte, Mont.; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled children in care of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661.
