Death came to Max George Gerlach, 69, after serious illness of three years during (sic?) on Thursday afternoon, December 21, 1939, as a welcome messenger of peace. Max Gerlach, sr. was born in Grambow, Meklenburg, Germany, on August 29, 1870. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church of his home town. Having lived in Luebock for sometime, he emigrated to the United States in 1892 and came directly here to Payette. Four children came of this union: Walter of New Plymouth, Emily and Max, jr. at home, and Mrs. Hershel Nelson of Boise. These four children, their mother and one grandchild, besides other relatives and many friends, remain to mourn at his grave in the new Rosedale Memorial park at Payette, where his body was interred on Saturday, December 23, after a memorial service at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran church, of which he was a charter member. Landon funeral home had charge of the service. The Rev. Albert Beutenmueller officiated. In his younger years Mr. Gerlach was a man of great physical strength and a hard worker, esteemed by all who knew him. “Requiescat in pace”
