Max George Gerlach, 91, Payette, died May 20, 2001, of natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the St. John's United Church of Christ, Payette. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette.

Max was born to Max and Bertha (Paulsen) Gerlach, Feb. 22, 1910, at Payette County, Idaho, on the farm his parents homesteaded; he lived there all his life. He graduated from Payette High School and on Feb. 6, 1949, married Marie Stewart. Max spent his life farming, and had dairy cows.

Max was the team captain for the shuffleboard team in Yuma, Ariz. He had the highest mens single score for shuffleboard. He enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle and horseshoes, and was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

For the last 26 years he enjoyed going to Yuma, Ariz., in the winter.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Gerlach of Payette; three stepsons, Charles Vaughn of Lewistown, Mont., Jim Vaughn of New Plymouth, and Harold Vaughn of Payette; one brother, Walter Gerlach of New Plymouth; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and an infant son, Robert Max Gerlach.
