Payette - Dorothy L. Longfellow, 83, Payette, died Sept. 19, 1993, in a Payette nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette with Pastor Arlen Benson of the Payette Assembly of God Church officiating. Ritualistic services will be by Diamond Rebekah Lodge #58, Council. Burial will follow at Rosedale Memorial Gardens, Payette.

She was born Oct. 5, 1909, at Marion, Kan., a daughter of E.C. Rush and Minnie Bell Giddings Rush. She was reared and educated there until 1926. The family then moved to Blackfoot, Idaho. She finished junior and senior high school there. She started working for Mountain Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company at Weiser in 1929. She married Lawrence Stover in 1931 and they farmed together on Weiser Flats for 11 years, They moved to Council and farmed for 17 more years. Lawrence died in July 1967. Dorothy later moved to Payette and resumed the telephone work until retirement in 1973. She later married Ralph Longfellow at Mesa, Ariz., Oct. 24, 1978. After his death in May 1981, she returned to her home in Payette, where she resided until her death.

She was a member of St. John's United church of Christ, and Diamond Rebekah Lodge #58, council. She loved the mountains and particularly enjoyed her huckleberry picking. Her daughter wrote this poem about that:

"There's a great big patch in the middle of the sky.
Where we hope our Mom goes by and by.
Yes, there's pickin' and a'pluckin' and a'huckleberryin'
The likes of which there's no comparin'
So, please, dear God, make our Mother all smiles
And put her in that patch at the end of her miles."

Survivors include a sister, Ruth France of McCall; a son, Alton Stover of Ola; a daughter, Dixie Thomas of Boise; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and her parents. Memorials may be made to St. John's United church of Christ or Council Community Hospital, in care of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661.

Friends may call today from 3 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer-Jensen Memory chapel, Payette.
